About the RC1 Keypad to USB PCB

RC1 Keypad to USB is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by tebl, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-1.2 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 72.4 × 45.1 mm, with 8 components from 7 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino Pro Micro, from the AVR/Arduino family. By type, the board carries 2 connectors, 2 diodes, 2 resistors, 1 module and 1 switch.

It belongs with the retro computing and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

A recreation of the MOS KIM-1 microcomputer, the start of the Commodore-line of computers. Complete with hex keypad, six digit displays and a lot of 8-bit fun!

Originally created by MOS in order to show off their new 6502-processor, it was a success that tapped into a market they probably never knew themselves was growing into a force to be reckoned with - the homecomputing market! Later bought up by little-known typewriter-manufacturer Commodore, the KIM-1 is an iconic piece of hardware and since I can't afford to buy one I'll build one instead.

RC1 Keypad to USB: common questions

What microcontroller does the RC1 Keypad to USB use?

The RC1 Keypad to USB is built around the Arduino Pro Micro, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the RC1 Keypad to USB PCB?

The RC1 Keypad to USB measures 72.4 × 45.1 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the RC1 Keypad to USB?

8 components, from 7 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the RC1 Keypad to USB design files?

From the tebl/RC-ONE repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the RC1 Keypad to USB design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-1.2 license, which tebl chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the RC1 Keypad to USB without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
