About the M8 PCB

M8 is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by thebiguno, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 50 × 50 mm, with 154 components from 16 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA32U4-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the MCP7940N and WS2812. By type, the board carries 74 capacitors, 66 ICs, 8 resistors, 2 crystals, 2 switches and 1 connector.

From the project

A home for a bunch of microcontroller projects which don't warrant their own repos.

microcontroller-projects ========================

A home for my microcontroller projects, including Stubby the Hexapod and others. It includes libraries for avr-gcc along with sample programs on how to use them, some KiCad modules, and the source code for a number of projects.

Some major projects include: Stubby the Hexapod (http://stubby.digitalcave.ca/stubby/) (Now extracted into its own repo at https://github.com/thebiguno/stubby) DrumMaster (http://drummaster.digitalcave.ca/drummaster/) * Chiindii (http://chiindii.digitalcave.ca/chiindii/)

M8: common questions

What microcontroller does the M8 use?

The M8 is built around the ATMEGA32U4-AU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the M8 PCB?

The M8 measures 50 × 50 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the M8?

154 components, from 16 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the M8 design files?

From the thebiguno/microcontroller-projects repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the M8 design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with thebiguno. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the M8 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
