About the SmartSupply PCB

SmartSupply is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by ThomasVDD, published on GitHub under the Custom license license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 169.3 × 128 mm, with 131 components from 63 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA328-P, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the INA219, BQ2057WSN_SOIC, LM6144, LT3080 and LM7805CT. By type, the board carries 59 resistors, 30 capacitors, 12 ICs, 9 diodes, 8 connectors and 5 switches.

It belongs with the power & battery and test & measurement designs in this gallery.

From the project

SmartSupply is a digital battery powered lab powersupply. It is Arduino compatible and can be controlled via PC over USB.

To understand the operation of the circuit, we will have to look at the schematic. I divided it into functional blocks, such that it is easier to understand; I will thus also explain the operation step by step.

The measurement of the current, and the generation of the signal ADC_Iout is done as follows. The output current flows through resistors R7 - R16. These total 1 ohm; the reason for not using 1R in the first place is twofold: 1 resistor would need to have a higher power rating (it needs to dissipate at least 1 W), and by using 10 1% resistors in parallel, we get a higher precision than…

SmartSupply: common questions

What microcontroller does the SmartSupply use?

The SmartSupply is built around the ATMEGA328-P, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the SmartSupply PCB?

The SmartSupply measures 169.3 × 128 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the SmartSupply?

131 components, from 63 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the SmartSupply design files?

From the ThomasVDD/SmartSupply repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the SmartSupply design in my own project?

It is published under Custom license, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the SmartSupply without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
