About the Led controller PCB

Led controller is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by thorio, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 64 × 26.9 mm, with 21 components from 16 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP-12F, from the ESP8266 family. Other key parts include the AMS1117-3.3. By type, the board carries 6 resistors, 4 switches, 4 capacitors, 3 connectors, 2 ICs and 1 transistor.

It belongs with the iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

Controls either individually addressible or single-color "dumb" LED strips, with an optional button or rotary encoder. This means I effectively get four different controller options in one PCB order.

It can use either 12V or 5V LED strips, running the controller off the same power supply as the LEDs.

Depending on the configuration, different parts must be printed and different components soldered to the board:

Led controller: common questions

What microcontroller does the Led controller use?

The Led controller is built around the ESP-12F, from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the Led controller PCB?

The Led controller measures 64 × 26.9 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Led controller?

21 components, from 16 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Led controller design files?

From the thorio/esphome-projects repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Led controller design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which thorio chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Led controller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
