About the EVN Kaifa ESP MQTT PCB

EVN Kaifa ESP MQTT is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by Tobias0110, published on GitHub under the GPL-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 79 × 31 mm, with 59 components from 33 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP-12F, from the ESP8266 family. Other key parts include the LMR36510FA, LM393 and CH340C. By type, the board carries 21 resistors, 16 diodes, 12 capacitors, 4 ICs, 3 crystals and 1 transistor.

It belongs with the iot & wireless, rf & radio and usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

From the project

Allows you to read the MBus data of a Kaifa smartmeter used by the EVN in Austria, decrypt the packages and send the values over MQTT.

The ESP8266 micro-controller syncs to the smartmeter's bursts of data so no packets are lost. After receiving a package it is decrypted and the DSLM/COSEM data structure is parsed to extract the measurement fields. These fields are then sent to an MQTT broker in a preselected format. All relevant parameters can be configured via the serial console at startup and are saved to the EEPROM.

EVN Kaifa ESP MQTT: common questions

What microcontroller does the EVN Kaifa ESP MQTT use?

The EVN Kaifa ESP MQTT is built around the ESP-12F, from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the EVN Kaifa ESP MQTT PCB?

The EVN Kaifa ESP MQTT measures 79 × 31 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the EVN Kaifa ESP MQTT?

59 components, from 33 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the EVN Kaifa ESP MQTT design files?

From the Tobias0110/EVN_Kaifa_ESP_MQTT repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the EVN Kaifa ESP MQTT design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-2.0 license, which Tobias0110 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the EVN Kaifa ESP MQTT without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
