About the Athenaeum PCB
Athenaeum is an open source ESP32 PCB design by AdityaJainDXB, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 130 × 80 mm, with 28 components from 15 distinct parts.
Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the MCP73831-2-OT and TLV70233_SOT23-5. By type, the board carries 11 resistors, 7 switches, 3 ICs, 3 connectors, 2 capacitors and 1 battery holder.
It belongs with the displays & leds, iot & wireless and power & battery designs in this gallery.
From the project
An open-source e-ink reader that pulls free books from Archive.org over Wi-Fi, lets you take notes on what you read, and doubles as a small offline viewer for NASA's public data — all on one custom board.
An open-source e-ink reader that pulls free books from Archive.org over Wi-Fi, lets you take notes on what you read, and doubles as a small offline viewer for NASA's public data — all on one custom board.
Archive.org and Open Library have millions of free, public-domain books. NASA publishes a huge amount of open data too — mission photos, the Astronomy Picture of the Day archive, Artemis mission logs. All of it needs an internet connection to actually use, which isn't a given everywhere — patchy school Wi-Fi, no data plan, being somewhere off-grid.

Athenaeum: common questions
What microcontroller does the Athenaeum use?
The Athenaeum is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.
How big is the Athenaeum PCB?
The Athenaeum measures 130 × 80 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.
How many components are on the Athenaeum?
28 components, from 15 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the Athenaeum design files?
From the AdityaJainDXB/Athenaeum repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the Athenaeum design in my own project?
Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which AdityaJainDXB chose for the repository.
Can I test firmware for the Athenaeum without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
