About the Thermal camera PCB
Thermal camera is an open source ESP32 PCB design by Badbird5907, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 98 × 56 mm, with 41 components from 31 distinct parts.
Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the MCP73871, MIC5504-3.3YM5, DW01A and MLX90640ESF-BAB-000-SP. By type, the board carries 14 resistors, 9 capacitors, 5 ICs, 5 connectors, 3 diodes and 2 transistors.
It belongs with the displays & leds designs in this gallery.
From the project
My design of a cheap and affordable thermal camera
This is my design of a cheap and affordable thermal camera (< $60, excl shipping)!. It utilizes the MLX90640 as the image sensor, and the esp32 to process and display the images on a TFT LCD screen.
I made this project because off the shelf thermal cameras are exuberantly expensive, and I need one to figure out if my PCBs are shorting.
The hardest part of this project so far was designing the battery charging circuit, as I needed to use multiple ICs to charge the battery, keep the voltage stable, and to keep the battery from overcharging.

Thermal camera: common questions
What microcontroller does the Thermal camera use?
The Thermal camera is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.
How big is the Thermal camera PCB?
The Thermal camera measures 98 × 56 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.
How many components are on the Thermal camera?
41 components, from 31 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the Thermal camera design files?
From the Badbird5907/thermal-camera repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the Thermal camera design in my own project?
Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which Badbird5907 chose for the repository.
Can I test firmware for the Thermal camera without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
