About the Hydra 83 PCB

Hydra 83 is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by BuzzL123, published on GitHub under the GPL-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 357.2 × 106.1 mm, with 211 components from 26 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the XC6206PXXXMR, SRV05-4 and W25Q128JVS. By type, the board carries 83 diodes, 16 capacitors, 13 resistors, 5 ICs, 4 connectors and 3 switches.

It belongs with the keyboards and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

An 83% Keyboard with PS/2 functionalitly

The Hydra 83 is a custom 83-key mechanical keyboard that can switch between USB HID and PS/2 via a hardware toggle. The name comes from two things:

- 83 — the total key count - Hydra — the multi-headed creature of myth, representing the board's ability to switch between protocols. In PS/2 mode it's a standard PS/2 keyboard; in USB mode it's a USB keyboard that also accepts a PS/2 mouse on the PS/2 connector

Hydra 83: common questions

What microcontroller does the Hydra 83 use?

The Hydra 83 is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Hydra 83 PCB?

The Hydra 83 measures 357.2 × 106.1 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Hydra 83?

211 components, from 26 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Hydra 83 design files?

From the BuzzL123/Hydra_83 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Hydra 83 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-2.0 license, which BuzzL123 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Hydra 83 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
