About the Plant-Monitor PCB

Plant-Monitor is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by C-yue28, published on GitHub. It is a 6-layer board measuring 42.8 × 66.3 mm, with 59 components from 34 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the AP2112K-3.3, DRV8833PWP, W25Q16JVSS and MCP73831-2-OT. By type, the board carries 21 capacitors, 15 resistors, 9 connectors, 5 ICs, 5 diodes and 2 switches.

It belongs with the sensors, displays & leds and dev boards & breakouts designs in this gallery.

From the project

ML-powered plant monitor, tracking metrics such as temperature, humidity, soil moisture, etc to inform plant watering behavior. A small OLED screen displays the various metrics and gives an estimate of the time until the next watering.

This smart, fully automated plant monitor system monitors soil moisture, atmospheric temperature/pressure, and humidity to determine when to water the plant, and then uses a small pump to water the plant. This is meant to be a project where I learn how to design a PCB, and it is also my first project with HackClub so I am getting used to this type of work. I kept it somewhat simple this time; if my custom devboard is successful I plan to build upon this project in the future and create an automated gardening system with a web dashboard.

Plant-Monitor: common questions

What microcontroller does the Plant-Monitor use?

The Plant-Monitor is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Plant-Monitor PCB?

The Plant-Monitor measures 42.8 × 66.3 mm, has 6 copper layers and is 1.566 mm thick.

How many components are on the Plant-Monitor?

59 components, from 34 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Plant-Monitor design files?

From the C-yue28/Plant-Monitor repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Plant-Monitor design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with C-yue28. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Plant-Monitor without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
