About the XDuinoRailShield PCB

XDuinoRailShield is an open source ESP32 PCB design by chatelao, published on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 34.3 × 19.7 mm, with 28 components from 17 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the LM339, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the MCP4725xxx-xCH, HT7533-1, BDR6133 and LIS3DH. By type, the board carries 9 resistors, 7 transistors, 5 ICs, 4 diodes, 2 connectors and 1 jumper.

It belongs with the iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

The friendly decoder development plattform for model railroad tinkers.

The primary tinker formfactor is the "Arduino UNO R3":

The XIAO formfactor may even fit some H0 locomotives, so COMING SOON:

Data - It extracts DCC raw signals from the rails. - It provides raw (RailCom) feedback to the rails.

The data pins are X (input) and Y (output) per default (no soldering needed, but can be reassigned to any other GPIO-Pins.

XDuinoRailShield: common questions

What microcontroller does the XDuinoRailShield use?

The XDuinoRailShield is built around the LM339, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the XDuinoRailShield PCB?

The XDuinoRailShield measures 34.3 × 19.7 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the XDuinoRailShield?

28 components, from 17 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the XDuinoRailShield design files?

From the chatelao/xDuinoRail-Decoder repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the XDuinoRailShield design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its AGPL-3.0 license, which chatelao chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the XDuinoRailShield without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
