From the project
esp32 swarm bots
nex is a swarm robotics project built around ESP32-based bots, computer vision, AprilTags, and a custom 4-layer PCB. The goal is to have multiple small bots identify and communicate with each other while working together as a swarm.
- ESP32-WROOM in each bot for wireless communication - Luckfox Lyra Zero W for computer vision - AprilTags for identifying individual bots - Custom 4-layer PCB designed in KiCad

Nex: common questions
What microcontroller does the Nex use?
The Nex is built around the ESP32-C3-WROOM-02-N4, from the ESP32 family.
How big is the Nex PCB?
The Nex measures 35 × 39 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.
How many components are on the Nex?
60 components, from 42 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the Nex design files?
From the dialgorithm/nex repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the Nex design in my own project?
The repository has no license, so all rights stay with dialgorithm. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.
Can I test firmware for the Nex without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
