About the Brickcontroller PCB

Brickcontroller is an open source ESP32 PCB design by ebastler, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 63 × 63 mm, with 100 components from 21 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-WROOM-32, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the AMS1117-3.3, SRV05-4 and CP2104. By type, the board carries 43 resistors, 29 connectors, 13 capacitors, 7 transistors, 4 ICs and 1 fuse.

It belongs with the iot & wireless and dev boards & breakouts designs in this gallery.

ESP32 based PCB to control LED-bricks

This PCB was designed to be a replacement for the feature-lacking original controller of this construction-brick compatible light-kit: https://de.aliexpress.com/item/4001236916887.html

My PCB supports 5 channels with 5 connectors each, but splitters for those lights exist, so more than 25 LEDs can be connected at a time. 100 Ohm series resistors for each LED connector protect the board from accidental short circuits on all outputs. The maximum current is defined by both the 500 mA input fuse, as well as the USB 2.0 Type C connector, which does not perform any current negotiation higher than…

Brickcontroller: common questions

What microcontroller does the Brickcontroller use?

The Brickcontroller is built around the ESP32-WROOM-32, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Brickcontroller PCB?

The Brickcontroller measures 63 × 63 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Brickcontroller?

100 components, from 21 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Brickcontroller design files?

From the ebastler/brickcontroller repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Brickcontroller design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license, which ebastler chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Brickcontroller without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
