About the Frontpanel PCB

Frontpanel is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by frep, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 150 × 100 mm, with 74 components from 35 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the esp8266Feather, from the ESP8266 family. Other key parts include the TPS2513, AZ1117, MCP73833, AD5274 and MCP23017. By type, the board carries 23 resistors, 15 connectors, 11 capacitors, 9 diodes, 8 ICs and 3 fuses.

It belongs with the power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

workspace for kicad projects

Working: -------- reading buttons and encoders over gpio-expander TPS2513: Loading iPhone (1A), iPad (1.5A)

Not working: ------------ LiPo charging indicators (2 leds) worked first, but not anymore. Maybe too low current resistor used? Load on indicator on the gpio-expander not working. Probably signal too low since it's taken after loadOn-diode.

More or less working: --------------------- * LiPo charger with different load currents works up to about 500mA. Imo it should work up to 1000mA.

Frontpanel: common questions

What microcontroller does the Frontpanel use?

The Frontpanel is built around the esp8266Feather, from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the Frontpanel PCB?

The Frontpanel measures 150 × 100 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Frontpanel?

74 components, from 35 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Frontpanel design files?

From the frep/kicad repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Frontpanel design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with frep. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Frontpanel without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
