About the ICEBreaker bitsy PCB

ICEBreaker bitsy is an open source FPGA PCB design by frohro, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 38.1 × 17.8 mm, with 98 components from 28 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ICE5LP4K-SG48, from the FPGA family. Other key parts include the USBLC6-2, 3.3V, 1V2 and W25Q. By type, the board carries 52 connectors, 22 capacitors, 13 resistors, 5 ICs, 4 diodes and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the dev boards & breakouts and usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

Icebreaker

This repository is to update the Bitsy 1.1c so it has JLCPCB part numbers and can be ordered.

The iCEBreaker FPGA board is a low cost, open-source educational FPGA development board.

The main motivating application of this board is for classes and workshops teaching the use of the open source FPGA design flow using Yosys, nextpnr, icestorm, iverilog, symbiflow and others. This means the board has to be low cost and have a nice set of features to allow for the design of interesting classes and workshop exercises. At the same time we want to allow the user to use the proprietary vendor tools…

ICEBreaker bitsy: common questions

What microcontroller does the ICEBreaker bitsy use?

The ICEBreaker bitsy is built around the ICE5LP4K-SG48, from the FPGA family.

How big is the ICEBreaker bitsy PCB?

The ICEBreaker bitsy measures 38.1 × 17.8 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the ICEBreaker bitsy?

98 components, from 28 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the ICEBreaker bitsy design files?

From the frohro/icebreaker repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the ICEBreaker bitsy design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with frohro. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the ICEBreaker bitsy without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug FPGA firmware against it before you order a PCB.
