Icebreaker

This repository is to update the Bitsy 1.1c so it has JLCPCB part numbers and can be ordered.

The iCEBreaker FPGA board is a low cost, open-source educational FPGA development board.

The main motivating application of this board is for classes and workshops teaching the use of the open source FPGA design flow using Yosys, nextpnr, icestorm, iverilog, symbiflow and others. This means the board has to be low cost and have a nice set of features to allow for the design of interesting classes and workshop exercises. At the same time we want to allow the user to use the proprietary vendor tools…

ICEBreaker: common questions

What microcontroller does the ICEBreaker use?

The ICEBreaker is built around the ICE5LP4K-SG48, from the FPGA family.

How big is the ICEBreaker PCB?

The ICEBreaker measures 73 × 37 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the ICEBreaker?

133 components, from 49 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the ICEBreaker design files?

From the frohro/icebreaker repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the ICEBreaker design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with frohro. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the ICEBreaker without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug FPGA firmware against it before you order a PCB.
