From the project

This project is my attempt at designing a fully programmable bench power supply from the ground up.

This project is my attempt at designing a fully programmable bench power supply from the ground up.

Most hobbyist power supplies are either simple fixed-voltage supplies or rely heavily on pre-built modules. I wanted to understand the entire system myself, from power conversion and feedback control to measurement, user interface, and digital regulation. The result is a custom-designed power supply capable of generating an adjustable output of approximately 0V to 30V at up to 5A from a standard 12V DC adapter.

Custom PSU: common questions

What microcontroller does the Custom PSU use?

The Custom PSU is built around the ATmega328-P, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Custom PSU PCB?

The Custom PSU measures 99.6 × 73.1 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Custom PSU?

105 components, from 64 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Custom PSU design files?

From the GodOfStrategy/Custom-PSU repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Custom PSU design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with GodOfStrategy. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Custom PSU without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
