About the Meiji Led Ring PCB

Meiji Led Ring is an open source Microchip SAM PCB design by gregdavill, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 64 × 64 mm, with 61 components from 17 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATSAML10D14A-MUTCT-ND, from the Microchip SAM family. Other key parts include the AP5726FDCG-7 and MCP1700T-3302E/TT. By type, the board carries 27 diodes, 12 resistors, 8 test points, 7 capacitors, 4 ICs and 2 inductors.

From the project

1 circuit board design a day for 31 days.

This is a compact light source that will fit around the front of a Meiji microscope.

I was donated a reel of White LEDs, so I figure I should make use of them, I'm not sure if 24 LEDs will be enough. They are rated for 0.1W per device.

This illuminator uses 24 While LEDs along with some high-frequency boost drivers, to avoid flickering whe filming.

The device is powered from a USB-C port.

Meiji Led Ring: common questions

What microcontroller does the Meiji Led Ring use?

The Meiji Led Ring is built around the ATSAML10D14A-MUTCT-ND, from the Microchip SAM family.

How big is the Meiji Led Ring PCB?

The Meiji Led Ring measures 64 × 64 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Meiji Led Ring?

61 components, from 17 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Meiji Led Ring design files?

From the gregdavill/advent-calendar-of-circuits-2020 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Meiji Led Ring design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with gregdavill. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Meiji Led Ring without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
