About the Whistle PCB

Whistle is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by hridcode, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 21 × 53.4 mm, with 61 components from 26 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the W25Q128JVS, PCM5102A, PAM8302AAD and MCP1700x-330xxTT. By type, the board carries 33 capacitors, 15 resistors, 7 ICs, 4 connectors, 1 crystal and 1 switch.

It belongs with the audio, power & battery and dev boards & breakouts designs in this gallery.

From the project

Whistle is the devboard of all time. Built off the RP2040 SoC, it features 22 GPIOs, 4 ADC pins, USB-C connection, a built in DAC and speaker amplifier (PCM5102A + PAM8302AAD), and built in LiPo battery charging (BQ25185) with percentage tracking.

Whistle is the devboard of all time. It shares many similarities with the Raspberry Pi Pico, having the RP2040 SoC on board. However, this board aims to improve on the Pico's shortcomings. No more dealing with the haunting micro-USB port! This board uses a USB-C connection port. It also has 1 extra ADC pin, as well as an inbuilt digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and mono speaker amplifier, making it perfect for audio-integrated projects!

Whistle: common questions

What microcontroller does the Whistle use?

The Whistle is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Whistle PCB?

The Whistle measures 21 × 53.4 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Whistle?

61 components, from 26 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Whistle design files?

From the hridcode/whistle repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Whistle design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with hridcode. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Whistle without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
