Quadrature sampling software defined radio for digital signal processing. Project for Embedded and Real Time Systems (CPTR480) and Engineering Electronics II (ENGR357).

This repository contains the KiCad schematics, PCB layouts, and Bills of Materials for the CPTR480 Quadrature Software Defined Radio (SDR) receiver board designed by Jeffrey McCormick and Daniel Mendoza for ENGR357 and CPTR480.

Other contributors: Riley Smith, Joshua Garbi

The radio is a direct-conversion, quadrature-sampling receiver (commonly utilizing a Tayloe Detector topology) managed by a Raspberry Pi Pico. The RF front-end downconverts the incoming antenna signal directly to baseband I (In-phase) and Q (Quadrature) audio signals, which are digitized and processed by the RP2040…

CPTR480-ENGR357 Quadrature SDR: common questions

What microcontroller does the CPTR480-ENGR357 Quadrature SDR use?

The CPTR480-ENGR357 Quadrature SDR is built around the Pico, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the CPTR480-ENGR357 Quadrature SDR PCB?

The CPTR480-ENGR357 Quadrature SDR measures 100 × 100 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the CPTR480-ENGR357 Quadrature SDR?

244 components, from 100 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the CPTR480-ENGR357 Quadrature SDR design files?

From the Jeffrey-McCormick/CPTR480-ENGR357_Quadrature_SDR repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the CPTR480-ENGR357 Quadrature SDR design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which Jeffrey-McCormick chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the CPTR480-ENGR357 Quadrature SDR without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
