About the CIMPLC-Hardware PCB

CIMPLC-Hardware is an open source ESP32 PCB design by jtmaston, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-W-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 153.5 × 73.7 mm, with 124 components from 17 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-DevKitC V4, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the TLP172AM(TPR,E, TLV9351IDCKR, MAX3221IDBRE4, PCA9555PW,118 and TCAN337DCNR. By type, the board carries 54 resistors, 49 ICs, 17 connectors and 4 capacitors.

It belongs with the iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

Hardware design of the CIMPLC

- Due to the fast development cycle and my inexperience with electronics, the outputs are only able to source current, not sink. The implementation, using solid-state relays, allow to source +12v when the pin is driven high, but otherwise leaves the pin floating.

- Similarly, due to my inexperience, I avoided implementing onboard power management, relying on an external +12v power supply, able to drive the pin outputs, as well as a +5v rail to power the control side. There will probably be more things , but this is all I've discovered up at this point.

CIMPLC-Hardware: common questions

What microcontroller does the CIMPLC-Hardware use?

The CIMPLC-Hardware is built around the ESP32-DevKitC V4, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the CIMPLC-Hardware PCB?

The CIMPLC-Hardware measures 153.5 × 73.7 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 4.69 mm thick.

How many components are on the CIMPLC-Hardware?

124 components, from 17 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the CIMPLC-Hardware design files?

From the jtmaston/CIMPLC-Hardware repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the CIMPLC-Hardware design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-W-2.0 license, which jtmaston chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the CIMPLC-Hardware without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
