About the Pocket lightning detector PCB
Pocket lightning detector is an open source ESP32 PCB design by Matyas604, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 99.7 × 35 mm, with 56 components from 34 distinct parts.
Its main chip is the ESP32-C3-MINI-1-N4, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the AP2112K-3.3, USBLC6-2SC6, AS3935, TP4056-42-ESOP8 and DW01A. By type, the board carries 18 capacitors, 18 resistors, 6 ICs, 4 switches, 3 diodes and 2 transistors.
It belongs with the iot & wireless and power & battery designs in this gallery.
From the project
A lightning detector that runs on a battery and fits in your pocket. It records the distance, energy and current time of a lightning strike, and you can then view this data via Bluetooth in mobile app. The time is synchronized via Bluetooth.
I really enjoyd this project because I tried out a lot of different thigs: studying datasheets and schematics, searching for and creating my own schematic, and designing the PCB and case.

Pocket lightning detector: common questions
What microcontroller does the Pocket lightning detector use?
The Pocket lightning detector is built around the ESP32-C3-MINI-1-N4, from the ESP32 family.
How big is the Pocket lightning detector PCB?
The Pocket lightning detector measures 99.7 × 35 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.
How many components are on the Pocket lightning detector?
56 components, from 34 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the Pocket lightning detector design files?
From the Matyas604/Pocket-lightning-detector repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the Pocket lightning detector design in my own project?
Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which Matyas604 chose for the repository.
Can I test firmware for the Pocket lightning detector without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
