About the PCB-Modular-Multi-Protocol-Hub

PCB-Modular-Multi-Protocol-Hub is an open source ESP32 PCB design by MbFredys, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-W-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 79.7 × 63.1 mm, with 208 components from 95 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-MINI-1-N8, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the TCA9544APWR, TPS7A2025PDQNR, LM2678T-ADJ, LC709203FQH-01TWG and LTC4412ES6#TRPBF. By type, the board carries 72 capacitors, 63 resistors, 20 ICs, 14 connectors, 12 diodes and 11 inductors.

It belongs with the iot & wireless and rf & radio designs in this gallery.

From the project

Modular ESP32-S3 hardware platform with interchangeable Zigbee/Thread and proprietary-RF modules; design documentation completed.

Conceptual modular embedded-hardware platform built around an ESP32-S3 host board and interchangeable radio modules.

The project investigates whether radio-specific functions can be separated from a reusable host board, allowing protocol variants to evolve without redesigning the complete platform.

- ESP32-S3 controller with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE - 12 V input and local power conversion - Optional Ethernet interface - Battery-support circuitry - Shared expansion connector for radio modules - USB and debugging/programming access

PCB-Modular-Multi-Protocol-Hub: common questions

What microcontroller does the PCB-Modular-Multi-Protocol-Hub use?

The PCB-Modular-Multi-Protocol-Hub is built around the ESP32-S3-MINI-1-N8, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the PCB-Modular-Multi-Protocol-Hub?

The PCB-Modular-Multi-Protocol-Hub measures 79.7 × 63.1 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the PCB-Modular-Multi-Protocol-Hub?

208 components, from 95 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the PCB-Modular-Multi-Protocol-Hub design files?

From the MbFredys/PCB-Modular-Multi-Protocol-Hub repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the PCB-Modular-Multi-Protocol-Hub design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-W-2.0 license, which MbFredys chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the PCB-Modular-Multi-Protocol-Hub without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
