About the Esp32-s3 PCB

Esp32-s3 is an open source ESP32 PCB design by n2048-creative-technology, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 70 × 44.7 mm, with 36 components from 24 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the USBLC6-2SC6 and LM1117DT-3.3. By type, the board carries 9 resistors, 7 capacitors, 6 connectors, 6 diodes, 3 ICs and 3 switches.

It belongs with the displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

Art installation: ESP32-S3 'leaf' PCBs with mmWave radar + TFT glitch-text display

An art-installation project built around small ESP32-S3 "leaf" PCBs: each leaf carries a radar presence sensor and a TFT display that reacts with a glitch/text effect. Includes the PCB design (KiCad, three board revisions), two firmware variants, and a source poem ("poetry monitors butterfly.pdf") that the TFT glitch text is drawn from.

Status: messy / in-progress. This repo is committed close to how it sits on the author's disk — see "Known issues" below before relying on it as a clean starting point.

Esp32-s3: common questions

What microcontroller does the Esp32-s3 use?

The Esp32-s3 is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Esp32-s3 PCB?

The Esp32-s3 measures 70 × 44.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Esp32-s3?

36 components, from 24 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Esp32-s3 design files?

From the n2048-creative-technology/butterflyeffect repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Esp32-s3 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which n2048-creative-technology chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Esp32-s3 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
