About the Leaf PCB

Leaf is an open source ESP32 PCB design by n2048-creative-technology, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 151.6 × 151.5 mm, with 24 components from 15 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the USBLC6-2SC6 and LM1117DT-3.3. By type, the board carries 8 capacitors, 8 resistors, 3 ICs, 3 connectors and 2 diodes.

It belongs with the displays & leds designs in this gallery.

From the project

Art installation: ESP32-S3 'leaf' PCBs with mmWave radar + TFT glitch-text display

An art-installation project built around small ESP32-S3 "leaf" PCBs: each leaf carries a radar presence sensor and a TFT display that reacts with a glitch/text effect. Includes the PCB design (KiCad, three board revisions), two firmware variants, and a source poem ("poetry monitors butterfly.pdf") that the TFT glitch text is drawn from.

Status: messy / in-progress. This repo is committed close to how it sits on the author's disk — see "Known issues" below before relying on it as a clean starting point.

Leaf: common questions

What microcontroller does the Leaf use?

The Leaf is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Leaf PCB?

The Leaf measures 151.6 × 151.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Leaf?

24 components, from 15 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Leaf design files?

From the n2048-creative-technology/butterflyeffect repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Leaf design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which n2048-creative-technology chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Leaf without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
