About the Frontpanel PCB

Frontpanel is an open source PIC PCB design by Na55im, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 132.5 × 20.5 mm, with 28 components from 18 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the PIC32MX350F128L, from the PIC family. Other key parts include the 24AA256, FT230X, MIC2981, LM2936 and TMP275. By type, the board carries 16 ICs, 8 connectors and 4 resistors.

It belongs with the displays & leds and test & measurement designs in this gallery.

Collaboration: keithley199-upgrade on GitHub (branch main).

This is an upgrade replacement for the digital control board on Keithley 199 multimeters.

The Keithley 199 is a digital multimeter built in the nineties. It is capable of current, voltage and resistance measurements and also provides a gpib interface for remote control.

These multimeters contains three electronic circuit boards, one which contains the analog circuitry, including analog signal conditioning and analog digital converter, a display board which contains the user interface, and a digital control board, with a processor…

Frontpanel: common questions

What microcontroller does the Frontpanel use?

The Frontpanel is built around the PIC32MX350F128L, from the PIC family.

How big is the Frontpanel PCB?

The Frontpanel measures 132.5 × 20.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Frontpanel?

28 components, from 18 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Frontpanel design files?

From the Na55im/keithley199-upgrade repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Frontpanel design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which Na55im chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Frontpanel without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug PIC firmware against it before you order a PCB.
