About the CarStatTracker PCB

CarStatTracker is an open source ESP32 PCB design by ShreshtChopra1, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 71.1 × 71.1 mm, with 41 components from 29 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-MINI-1-N8, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the ICM-42688-P, L86-M33_GPS, SN65HVD230DR, MP2315GJ-Z and TLV1117-33. By type, the board carries 12 capacitors, 9 resistors, 7 ICs, 4 connectors, 4 diodes and 2 switches.

It belongs with the rf & radio, iot & wireless and sensors designs in this gallery.

From the project

ESP32-S3 automotive telematics board — GPS + 6-axis IMU + OBD-II CAN, streamed over BLE. KiCad schematic, full BOM, and design doc.

An ESP32-S3 telematics board that measures how a car is actually driven — GPS speed, 6-axis motion, and the ECU's own speed signal off the OBD-II CAN bus — and streams it to a phone over BLE.

Status: schematic complete and costed. PCB layout not yet routed, board not yet fabricated. This repo is the electrical design — KiCad schematic, board file, and a full design document covering part selection, pin assignment, layout rules and BOM.

CarStatTracker: common questions

What microcontroller does the CarStatTracker use?

The CarStatTracker is built around the ESP32-S3-MINI-1-N8, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the CarStatTracker PCB?

The CarStatTracker measures 71.1 × 71.1 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the CarStatTracker?

41 components, from 29 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the CarStatTracker design files?

From the ShreshtChopra1/CarStatTracker repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the CarStatTracker design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which ShreshtChopra1 chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the CarStatTracker without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
