About the Canary PCB
Canary is an open source ESP32 PCB design by stoatworks-labs, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 100 × 81 mm, with 76 components from 50 distinct parts.
Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N8, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the AP63200WU-7, CH224K, ADM3053BRWZ-REEL7 and W5500. By type, the board carries 29 capacitors, 24 resistors, 5 ICs, 5 connectors, 5 diodes and 3 switches.
It belongs with the audio designs in this gallery.
From the project
Open-hardware IP-to-CAN converter compatible with the d&b R70 Ethernet-to-CAN protocol. ESP32-S3, W5500, isolated CAN, 3D-printed case. Not affiliated with d&b audiotechnik.
KiCad 10 project for the R70-compatible IP-to-CAN bridge. Architecture and the reasoning behind every part choice: ../docs/DECISIONS.md (H1–H13).
All four sheets are drawn — 68 symbols, 0 unconnected pins on every sheet, and the exported netlist confirms every cross-sheet bus connects. One part is still missing (U101, see below).
All 68 symbols have footprints assigned — except that the three etherCON jacks carry a deliberate placeholder (see below).

Canary: common questions
What microcontroller does the Canary use?
The Canary is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N8, from the ESP32 family.
How big is the Canary PCB?
The Canary measures 100 × 81 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.
How many components are on the Canary?
76 components, from 50 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.
Where can I download the Canary design files?
From the stoatworks-labs/canary repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.
Can I use the Canary design in my own project?
Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which stoatworks-labs chose for the repository.
Can I test firmware for the Canary without the hardware?
Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
