About the SerialTap PCB

SerialTap is an open source ESP32 PCB design by tfindlay-au, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 54 × 22 mm, with 33 components from 22 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-C3-MINI-1-H4X, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the TPS2553DBVR, LM66200DRLR, TPS62162DSGT, TXU0204RUTR and TPD4E05U06QDQARQ1. By type, the board carries 11 capacitors, 10 resistors, 6 ICs, 2 connectors, 2 switches and 1 diode.

It belongs with the iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

PCB Design for a drop in UART serial tap

An open-hardware board that puts an appliance's 5 V serial service port on Home Assistant. An ESP32-C3 with level translation, powered by the appliance itself: one 4-wire cable carries 5 V, GND, TX and RX.

The reference target is a Haier AS50QDFHRA split-system air conditioner, whose service port speaks GE Appliances GEA3 at 230400 8N1 (docs/gea3.md). The board is not specialised to it: any appliance exposing 5 V and a UART on a service connector is in scope.

SerialTap: common questions

What microcontroller does the SerialTap use?

The SerialTap is built around the ESP32-C3-MINI-1-H4X, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the SerialTap PCB?

The SerialTap measures 54 × 22 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the SerialTap?

33 components, from 22 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the SerialTap design files?

From the tfindlay-au/SerialTap repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the SerialTap design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-P-2.0 license, which tfindlay-au chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the SerialTap without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
