About the Z280 PCB

Z280 is an open source PCB design by transistorfet, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 100 × 115 mm, with 55 components from 34 distinct parts.

Other key parts include the 74HC14, Z280CPU, 74HC573, 74HC138 and 74HC08. By type, the board carries 17 capacitors, 10 ICs, 10 connectors, 7 jumpers, 6 resistors and 2 transistors.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

A Single Board Computer with a Z280 CPU using the Z-BUS interface

This board has a number of issues described in the errata, which require reworking the board. The flash chip needs to be upside down, and the address selection latch's operation is backwards and needs an extra inverter gate, it or won't run code. Also, the serial port cannot function correctly without an external clock circuit to directly supply the UART clock because driving it indirectly with the Z280's timer causes frequent clock glitches resulting in invalid characters being sent/received.

Z280: common questions

How big is the Z280 PCB?

The Z280 measures 100 × 115 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 4.69 mm thick.

How many components are on the Z280?

55 components, from 34 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Z280 design files?

From the transistorfet/z280 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Z280 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which transistorfet chose for the repository.
