About the BikeNav PCB

BikeNav is an open source ESP32 PCB design by utydfd, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 38 × 101 mm, with 34 components from 17 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the SPX3819M5-L-3-3 and TP4056-42-ESOP8. By type, the board carries 8 switches, 8 capacitors, 8 resistors, 5 ICs and 3 connectors.

It belongs with the displays & leds, rf & radio and iot & wireless designs in this gallery.

From the project

ESP32 based GPS bike navigation

Either import a GPX track or plan right inside the app(right now using project OSRM API), it downloads the required map tiles and saves them.

I can pick a trip from the main screen and send it over to the ESP via BLE, first the GPX is sent and then the tiles. They are converted from PNG to bitmap, compressed using RLE for faster transfers. The ESP is saving them to the SD card as they come. It’s also appending an index of tiles, which is sent from the ESP to the app, so that only the missing tiles are sent.

BikeNav: common questions

What microcontroller does the BikeNav use?

The BikeNav is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the BikeNav PCB?

The BikeNav measures 38 × 101 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.600198 mm thick.

How many components are on the BikeNav?

34 components, from 17 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the BikeNav design files?

From the utydfd/BikeNav repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the BikeNav design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which utydfd chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the BikeNav without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
