About the EsperDNS PCB

EsperDNS is an open source ESP32 PCB design by zachmorr, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 51 × 48 mm, with 58 components from 22 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-WROOM-32E, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the AZ1117EH-3.3TRG1, CP2102-GMR_NRND and DP83848C. By type, the board carries 29 resistors, 14 capacitors, 5 transistors, 4 ICs, 2 connectors and 2 diodes.

Ad Blocking with an ESP32

All Esper hardware is designed to be as easy to modify and manufacture as possible. For the most part this means using free, open-source tools and simplifying the design to have the smallest DOM possible.

KiCAD is used for all PCB design since it is free and has a large community support.

The Esper device is designed to be manufactured and assembled at JLCPCB. At low quantities (5-10 boards), no other board house comes close on price and ease of use.

EsperDNS: common questions

What microcontroller does the EsperDNS use?

The EsperDNS is built around the ESP32-WROOM-32E, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the EsperDNS PCB?

The EsperDNS measures 51 × 48 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the EsperDNS?

58 components, from 22 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the EsperDNS design files?

From the zachmorr/esper repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the EsperDNS design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which zachmorr chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the EsperDNS without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
