About the Mosaic PCB

Mosaic is an open source FPGA PCB design by bitbarista, published on GitHub under the Custom license license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 20.3 × 51.4 mm, with 51 components from 18 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ICE40UP5K-SG48I, from the FPGA family. Other key parts include the SN74CB3T3245PWR, SN74LVC541ADGVR, SN74LVC1G125DCKR, SN74LVC14APWR and W25Q16JVUXIQ. By type, the board carries 21 capacitors, 12 resistors, 11 ICs, 4 connectors and 3 diodes.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

MOSaic: a cycle-exact FPGA replacement for the Commodore 64's 6510 CPU (iCE40UP5K)

MOSaic is a drop-in replacement for the Commodore 64's 6510 CPU. It plugs into the 6510 socket and behaves like the original chip, cycle for cycle, undocumented opcodes and quirks included. Inside is a Lattice iCE40UP5K FPGA, checked against a transistor-level simulation of the real chip and against VICE's test suite on a real C64.

Mosaic: common questions

What microcontroller does the Mosaic use?

The Mosaic is built around the ICE40UP5K-SG48I, from the FPGA family.

How big is the Mosaic PCB?

The Mosaic measures 20.3 × 51.4 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Mosaic?

51 components, from 18 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Mosaic design files?

From the bitbarista/mosaic repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Mosaic design in my own project?

It is published under Custom license, which limits how it may be reused; read the license before building on it.

Can I test firmware for the Mosaic without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug FPGA firmware against it before you order a PCB.
