About the FlipDotDisplay PCB

FlipDotDisplay is an open source ESP8266 PCB design by comakingspace, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 100 × 100 mm, with 53 components from 24 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP8266_D1_MINI, from the ESP8266 family. Other key parts include the 74HC595, L293D, L7805 and ATMEGA328P-PU. By type, the board carries 28 ICs, 8 capacitors, 7 resistors, 5 connectors, 3 diodes and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the iot & wireless and displays & leds designs in this gallery.

A dot on the display is switched by magnetising an inductor, which causes the colored dot (with a small magnet embedded) to change the orientation. Because the core of the inductor stays magnetized the state of the dot is stable even without being powered.

The inductors of the pixels are hooked up in an array with 24x16. Each column is connected to a single pin of the connector and each row has two inputs; one for positive voltage and one for negative (see FlipDotSchematic). By applying a voltage to a row and a column the corresponding pixel…

FlipDotDisplay: common questions

What microcontroller does the FlipDotDisplay use?

The FlipDotDisplay is built around the ESP8266_D1_MINI, from the ESP8266 family.

How big is the FlipDotDisplay PCB?

The FlipDotDisplay measures 100 × 100 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the FlipDotDisplay?

53 components, from 24 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the FlipDotDisplay design files?

From the comakingspace/FlipDotDisplay repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the FlipDotDisplay design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with comakingspace. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the FlipDotDisplay without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP8266 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
