Some work I do for CycloneRocketry

This is an avionics control board for Iowa State's Cyclone Rocketry club. Our rocketry must carry a payload to a target altitude of 10,000ft. Score is determined by how close a team's rocket can get to the target altitude, among other things. To ensure we hit our target altitude, we have an air brakes system which actively calculates when and how long it needs to deploy it's air brakes system. The board additionally provides data-logging and radio-relayed GPS tracking.

AvionicsBoard: common questions

What microcontroller does the AvionicsBoard use?

The AvionicsBoard is built around the ATSAMD21G18, from the Microchip SAM family.

How big is the AvionicsBoard PCB?

The AvionicsBoard measures 157.4 × 59 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the AvionicsBoard?

70 components, from 36 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the AvionicsBoard design files?

From the djmallek/CycloneRocketry repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the AvionicsBoard design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with djmallek. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the AvionicsBoard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Microchip SAM firmware against it before you order a PCB.
