About the E28-cluster PCB

E28-cluster is an open source ESP32 PCB design by dowster, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 130.8 × 139.7 mm, with 74 components from 17 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-DEVKITC-32D, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the MCP23017_SP, MCP2562-E-P, AP1117-33 and L7805. By type, the board carries 6 resistors, 5 ICs, 5 transistors and 2 connectors.

It belongs with the test & measurement and sensors designs in this gallery.

E28 Cluster Driver is (going to be...) an ESP32 based driver board which allows the E28, and possibly E21/E30, cluster to be controlled via custom inputs. For the first version custom input will be done solely via CAN Bus. There won't be any hardcoded message spec, that will be configurable by the user after firmware has been flashed.

Input to the E28 cluster driver shall be done via CAN Bus and possibly with a web based interface for diagnostics, calibration, and configuration. The CAN input shall be configurable so that any value on a can message may be mapped to any of the outputs…

E28-cluster: common questions

What microcontroller does the E28-cluster use?

The E28-cluster is built around the ESP32-DEVKITC-32D, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the E28-cluster PCB?

The E28-cluster measures 130.8 × 139.7 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the E28-cluster?

74 components, from 17 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the E28-cluster design files?

From the dowster/e28-cluster repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the E28-cluster design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with dowster. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the E28-cluster without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
