About the Z80DevBoard PCB

Z80DevBoard is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by gianluca-rainis, published on GitHub under the CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 219 × 108.5 mm, with 179 components from 47 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the 74HC14, 74HC04, 74HC00 and TXS0104EPW. By type, the board carries 64 diodes, 61 resistors, 20 capacitors, 6 switches, 4 ICs and 3 connectors.

It belongs with the dev boards & breakouts and retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

An advanced development board for the Z80 microprocessor, powered by an RP2040.

The Z80DevBoard is an advanced development board for the Z80 microprocessor, based on the RP2040.

This board is meant to be a practical educational tool, to help students learn how the Z80, one of the first CPUs and the foundation of all modern ones, works, and how to develop software for it.

To the Z80 is combined a modern RP2040, a powerful microcontroller designed by Raspberry Pi. It allows easy interaction with the board's components: you can load a program for the Z80 into RAM; or establish a serial connection with the computer to perform live operations, such as reading and writing to…

Z80DevBoard: common questions

What microcontroller does the Z80DevBoard use?

The Z80DevBoard is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Z80DevBoard PCB?

The Z80DevBoard measures 219 × 108.5 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Z80DevBoard?

179 components, from 47 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Z80DevBoard design files?

From the gianluca-rainis/Z80DevBoard repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Z80DevBoard design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its CERN-OHL-S-2.0 license, which gianluca-rainis chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Z80DevBoard without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
