About the Spelltwister PCB

Spelltwister is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by LucasLHenry, published on GitHub under the MIT license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 120 × 102.5 mm, with 251 components from 45 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the AMS1117-3.3, W25Q128JVS, CD4051B, TL074 and MCP6004. By type, the board carries 101 resistors, 66 capacitors, 25 diodes, 20 connectors, 16 ICs and 5 switches.

From the project

This is the third version of the code for the Spelltwister module with CCTV. This version uses the Arduino platform and the RP2040, a chip developed by Raspberry Pi for their RPi Pico board.

The three knobs are Time, Shape, and Ratio. Time controls the overall time for one cycle of the waveform, so also functions as pitch in VCO mode. Ratio controls the ratio between the time spent on the first stage versus the second stage (so ratio set fully CCW would mean that all time is spent falling, which would form a downwards saw wave). Lastly, Shape controls the curvature of the rising and falling, from exponential to logarithmic. With Shape in it's center position, the slope is linear, but turning it below 12 o'clock makes the rising and falling more exponential, while turning it the…

Spelltwister: common questions

What microcontroller does the Spelltwister use?

The Spelltwister is built around the RP2040, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Spelltwister PCB?

The Spelltwister measures 120 × 102.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Spelltwister?

251 components, from 45 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Spelltwister design files?

From the LucasLHenry/spelltwister repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Spelltwister design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its MIT license, which LucasLHenry chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Spelltwister without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
