About the Dongle PCB

Dongle is an open source ESP32 PCB design by mornepousse, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 30 × 42 mm, with 40 components from 14 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the NRF24L01_BREAKOUT, CH340C and CH334R. By type, the board carries 17 resistors, 10 capacitors, 5 ICs, 4 jumpers, 3 connectors and 1 transistor.

It belongs with the usb & debug tools, keyboards and rf & radio designs in this gallery.

From the project

Recepteur USB 2.4 GHz du clavier Niphargus et de la souris Conchodytes — ESP32-S3 / ESP32-P4, nRF24L01+, format M.2 Key B

USB HID receiver for the Niphargus split keyboard: two NRF24L01+ radios, one per half, an ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, and an M.2 Key B card edge that plugs into a laptop WWAN slot.

This is the design that was manufactured as V1.0 and has been running in the M.2 WWAN slot of a Dell Latitude 5430 for several months.

EN also carries a 10 kΩ pull-up (R19) and 100 nF to ground (C7), so the host can reset the module through pin 67.

Dongle: common questions

What microcontroller does the Dongle use?

The Dongle is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Dongle PCB?

The Dongle measures 30 × 42 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Dongle?

40 components, from 14 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Dongle design files?

From the mornepousse/KeSp_dongle repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Dongle design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with mornepousse. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Dongle without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
