About the Dongle PCB

Dongle is an open source ESP32 PCB design by mornepousse, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 30 × 37.5 mm, with 29 components from 19 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the NRF24L01_Breakout, W25Q128JVS, AMS1117-3.3, CH334R and ESP32-S3-WROOM-1. By type, the board carries 14 resistors, 7 capacitors, 6 ICs, 1 transistor and 1 connector.

It belongs with the iot & wireless, keyboards and usb & debug tools designs in this gallery.

From the project

Custom ergonomic split fully-wireless keyboard - ESP32-S3, NRF24L01+, KiCad 9

USB dongle that receives keystrokes from both keyboard halves via NRF24L01+ and presents as USB HID to the host PC.

Single USB cable to PC, split internally: - Port 1: ESP32-S3 native USB (TinyUSB HID in production) - Port 2: CH340C UART (flash and debug) - Ports 3-4: unused

Target: 30 x 35 mm including antennas, to fit in an M.2 network card slot.

USB 5V --> AMS1117-3.3 --> 3.3V for ESP32-S3, NRF24L01+, and all logic.

Dongle: common questions

What microcontroller does the Dongle use?

The Dongle is built around the ESP32-S3, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Dongle PCB?

The Dongle measures 30 × 37.5 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Dongle?

29 components, from 19 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Dongle design files?

From the mornepousse/SpLiT_KaSe repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Dongle design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with mornepousse. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Dongle without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
