About the 24pin module

24pin module is an open source ESP32 PCB design by nathanfraske, published on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 82.9 × 79 mm, with 46 components from 24 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-MINI-1-N4R2, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the TJA1462AT/0Z, LP5907MFX-3.3/NOPB, SN74LVC1G17DBVR and INA228AIDGSR. By type, the board carries 15 capacitors, 9 ICs, 9 resistors, 5 connectors, 2 switches and 2 diodes.

From the project

Same circuit as ../atx-24pin (the canonical 24-pin ATX interposer); different PCB layout only — 24-pin input (J3) with the 24-pin output (J4) rotated 90° CCW for a right-angle cable exit.

rev2 ties J1 pin 1 (RJ-45 VCC) to +5VSB, so the module feeds the Hub on both the dedicated JST 5VSB feed and its RJ-45 VCC pin, in parallel. Because the Hub power mux sits only in the JST leg (JST = mux input, RJ-45 VCC = mux output), a short RJ-45 patch makes the RJ-45 the lower-resistance path — it carries the majority of the bulk current (up to ~1.7 A at 3 A total, over the 1.5 A RJ-45 contact rating)…

24pin module: common questions

What microcontroller does the 24pin module use?

The 24pin module is built around the ESP32-S3-MINI-1-N4R2, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the 24pin module?

The 24pin module measures 82.9 × 79 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the 24pin module?

46 components, from 24 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the 24pin module design files?

From the nathanfraske/CEC-Platform repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the 24pin module design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its Apache-2.0 license, which nathanfraske chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the 24pin module without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
