About the PLC-14500 PCB

PLC-14500 is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by nicolacimmino, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 160.1 × 101 mm, with 160 components from 23 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Arduino Nano, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the 74HC14, 4051, NE555, 4099 and 74HC590A. By type, the board carries 56 resistors, 53 diodes, 19 capacitors, 18 switches and 14 ICs.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

Retro trainer board based on the MC14500 1-bit ICU. The project is OSHW certified and a ready to assemble kit is available on Tindie.

- Moved LED labelled HI to the left of LO (to match switch direction)

- Added 47K in series to U2 Pin3 OUT (to remove gosthing of outputs on inputs LEDs due to MC14500 W line timing)

- Passed OUT7 through a NOT before triggering TMR0, left LED direct to OUT7 (NE555 triggers on low which makes it hakward without negation as the monostable triggers always once on reset)

PLC-14500: common questions

What microcontroller does the PLC-14500 use?

The PLC-14500 is built around the Arduino Nano, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the PLC-14500 PCB?

The PLC-14500 measures 160.1 × 101 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the PLC-14500?

160 components, from 23 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the PLC-14500 design files?

From the nicolacimmino/PLC-14500 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the PLC-14500 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which nicolacimmino chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the PLC-14500 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
