About the Zerofrank PCB

Zerofrank is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by rh1tech, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 65 × 25 mm, with 89 components from 38 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2350, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the AMS1117-3.3, USBLC6-2SC6, ESP-PSRAM64H, W25Q128JVS and TDA1387T. By type, the board carries 34 resistors, 33 capacitors, 7 ICs, 7 connectors, 2 switches and 2 LEDs.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

RP2350 Based Hardware Emulation Platform

FRANK is a hardware emulation platform built around the Raspberry Pi RP2350 (Pico 2 modules and RP2350A QFN). RP2040 / Pico still works in FRANK's socket, but in practice only a handful of firmware (mainly the older ZX Spectrum cores) still targets RP2040. Everything modern (IBM PC, NES, SNES, Genesis, the DOOM / id Tech 1 ports, FRANK OS, and so on) is RP2350-only.

Zerofrank: common questions

What microcontroller does the Zerofrank use?

The Zerofrank is built around the RP2350, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Zerofrank PCB?

The Zerofrank measures 65 × 25 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1 mm thick.

How many components are on the Zerofrank?

89 components, from 38 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Zerofrank design files?

From the rh1tech/frank repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Zerofrank design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which rh1tech chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Zerofrank without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
