About the Frank core2u PCB

Frank core2u is an open source RP2040/RP2350 PCB design by rh1tech, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 4-layer board measuring 67 × 55 mm, with 146 components from 52 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the RP2350B, from the RP2040/RP2350 family. Other key parts include the W25Q128JVPIQ, ESP-PSRAM64H, RP2350, LM358 and TDA1387T. By type, the board carries 59 capacitors, 44 resistors, 14 ICs, 12 connectors, 5 switches and 4 inductors.

It belongs with the retro computing designs in this gallery.

From the project

RP2350 Based Hardware Emulation Platform

FRANK is a hardware emulation platform built around the Raspberry Pi RP2350 (Pico 2 modules and RP2350A QFN). RP2040 / Pico still works in FRANK's socket, but in practice only a handful of firmware (mainly the older ZX Spectrum cores) still targets RP2040. Everything modern (IBM PC, NES, SNES, Genesis, the DOOM / id Tech 1 ports, FRANK OS, and so on) is RP2350-only.

Frank core2u: common questions

What microcontroller does the Frank core2u use?

The Frank core2u is built around the RP2350B, from the RP2040/RP2350 family.

How big is the Frank core2u PCB?

The Frank core2u measures 67 × 55 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Frank core2u?

146 components, from 52 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Frank core2u design files?

From the rh1tech/frank repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Frank core2u design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which rh1tech chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Frank core2u without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug RP2040/RP2350 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
