About the Arduino Leonardo PCB

Arduino Leonardo is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by sabogalc, published on GitHub under the WTFPL license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 68.6 × 53.3 mm, with 50 components from 32 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA32U4-XU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the LP2985-3.3, LMV358IDGKR and NCP1117-5.0_SOT223. By type, the board carries 15 capacitors, 9 resistors, 7 connectors, 6 diodes, 5 ICs and 2 inductors.

From the project

A collection of Arduino boards recreated from scratch in KiCad. Legacy USB connectors have been replaced with USB-C where applicable.

The HID automation that this board offers would likely be very useful in setups such as setting up many school or work computers with identical settings, though I'm not sure if my version of the design retained this functionality. I'm used to needing a configuration channel logic IC when working with USB-C host/sub switching, but if anyone who knows more about this has any feedback, please let me know.

Arduino Leonardo: common questions

What microcontroller does the Arduino Leonardo use?

The Arduino Leonardo is built around the ATMEGA32U4-XU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Arduino Leonardo PCB?

The Arduino Leonardo measures 68.6 × 53.3 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Arduino Leonardo?

50 components, from 32 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Arduino Leonardo design files?

From the sabogalc/KiCad-Arduino-Boards repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Arduino Leonardo design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its WTFPL license, which sabogalc chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Arduino Leonardo without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
