About the Arduino Mega 2560 PCB

Arduino Mega 2560 is an open source AVR/Arduino PCB design by sabogalc, published on GitHub under the WTFPL license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 101.6 × 53.3 mm, with 60 components from 32 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ATMEGA2560-16AU, from the AVR/Arduino family. Other key parts include the NCP1117-5.0_SOT223, ATMEGA16U2-MU, LP2985-3.3 and LMV358IDGKR. By type, the board carries 18 capacitors, 12 connectors, 9 resistors, 7 diodes, 5 ICs and 2 crystals.

From the project

A collection of Arduino boards recreated from scratch in KiCad. Legacy USB connectors have been replaced with USB-C where applicable.

I don't currently have any projects that require the whopping 54 GPIO pins that this board offers, but I saw that it was commonly used in the robotics and 3D printing spaces, and I've also seen it used to read EEPROM data on Ben Eater's YouTube channel.

Below are the screenshots of this board from KiCad's 3D board viewer.

Arduino Mega 2560: common questions

What microcontroller does the Arduino Mega 2560 use?

The Arduino Mega 2560 is built around the ATMEGA2560-16AU, from the AVR/Arduino family.

How big is the Arduino Mega 2560 PCB?

The Arduino Mega 2560 measures 101.6 × 53.3 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Arduino Mega 2560?

60 components, from 32 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Arduino Mega 2560 design files?

From the sabogalc/KiCad-Arduino-Boards repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Arduino Mega 2560 design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its WTFPL license, which sabogalc chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Arduino Mega 2560 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug AVR/Arduino firmware against it before you order a PCB.
