About the Pixel snap voice PCB

Pixel snap voice is an open source ESP32 PCB design by zeeman-effect, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 64 × 86 mm, with 55 components from 32 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-MINI-1U-N8, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the ES8311, BQ24074RGTR, AP2112K-3.3, AP22804AW5 and NS4150B. By type, the board carries 21 capacitors, 11 resistors, 8 ICs, 2 connectors, 2 diodes and 1 crystal.

It belongs with the audio and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

A simple audio recording device that magnetically attaches to the back of a Pixel device

4-layer 0.8 mm, ENIG. Origin = magnet-ring center (same as CAD). USB is full speed and deliberately not impedance controlled — see Stackup.

- Product: recorder/ — schematic + PCB. Open recorder.kicadpro. - Learning: exampleproject/ — hand-made KiCad 10 sandbox. Not product truth. Leave it alone unless you are in that lesson.

routepcb.py and generatepcb.py need an interpreter that can import pcbnew. On Linux that is the system python3; on Windows use %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\KiCad\10.0\bin\python.exe.

The KiCad project lives in the zeeman-effect/pixel-snap-voice repository on GitHub; these links point at the commit this page was built from.

Pixel snap voice: common questions

What microcontroller does the Pixel snap voice use?

The Pixel snap voice is built around the ESP32-S3-MINI-1U-N8, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Pixel snap voice PCB?

The Pixel snap voice measures 64 × 86 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 0.8 mm thick.

How many components are on the Pixel snap voice?

55 components, from 32 distinct parts, with part numbers taken from the project's own BOM. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Pixel snap voice design files?

From the zeeman-effect/pixel-snap-voice repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout, the schematic and the BOM; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Pixel snap voice design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with zeeman-effect. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Pixel snap voice without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
