About the Alcantara PCB

Alcantara is an open source ESP32 PCB design by zenitheesc, published on GitHub. It is a 4-layer board measuring 101.5 × 43.6 mm, with 88 components from 49 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-WROOM-32, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the TLV809ED29DBZR, MAX17201G+T, TLV803EA30DCKR, TC1264-3.3VDB and PESD2ETH-ADX. By type, the board carries 33 resistors, 20 capacitors, 11 ICs, 6 connectors, 5 transistors and 5 switches.

It belongs with the rf & radio, iot & wireless and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Mobile Ground Station for stratospheric probe monitoring and rescue. Goes well with the Zenith Monitor app.

The Alcantara board functions as a ground station and data hub for the probe flights .

It is equipped with a EBYTE E22-900M30S 30dB module that carries the Semtech SX1262 transceiver, capable of LoRa, (G)FSK and OOK. The packets received from the probe can then be sent via WiFi, Bluetooth or Serially to a host computer or mobile phone.

The onboard GNSS module carries the NEO-M8N from u-blox, enabling it to be used as a tracking device.

Alcantara: common questions

What microcontroller does the Alcantara use?

The Alcantara is built around the ESP32-WROOM-32, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Alcantara PCB?

The Alcantara measures 101.5 × 43.6 mm, has 4 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Alcantara?

88 components, from 49 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Alcantara design files?

From the zenitheesc/Alcantara repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Alcantara design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with zenitheesc. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Alcantara without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
