About the Gameboy dmg PCB

Gameboy dmg is an open source Raspberry Pi PCB design by alxhoff, published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. It is a 2-layer board measuring 82.5 × 87.5 mm, with 52 components from 34 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the Raspberry_Pi_2_3, from the Raspberry Pi family. Other key parts include the MCP23017_SO, TP4056, FS312F-G, FS8205 and MT3608. By type, the board carries 13 resistors, 11 capacitors, 8 switches, 7 connectors, 6 ICs and 5 diodes.

It belongs with the audio, retro computing and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

PCB for Gameboy DMG with audio and GPIO expander to provide I2C interface to push buttons

My revived Corona project, work in progress. The idea of this board is to be a single board drop in for the Gameboy DMG case that is readily availble from all the normal places (eBay, AliExpress etc.) to provide easy game emulation using a Raspberry Pi Zero with distros such as RetroPie. The whole style of the board is that the PCB itself is self explanitory and doesn't require you to go through the schematics, something almost anyone with a bit of soldering knowledge can put together. Many features of the board can be enabled/disabled or changed using the many solder jumper pads.

Gameboy dmg: common questions

What microcontroller does the Gameboy dmg use?

The Gameboy dmg is built around the Raspberry_Pi_2_3, from the Raspberry Pi family.

How big is the Gameboy dmg PCB?

The Gameboy dmg measures 82.5 × 87.5 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Gameboy dmg?

52 components, from 34 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Gameboy dmg design files?

From the alxhoff/gameboy-dmg-pcb repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Gameboy dmg design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-3.0 license, which alxhoff chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Gameboy dmg without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug Raspberry Pi firmware against it before you order a PCB.
