About the Avalanche32 PCB

Avalanche32 is an open source ESP32 PCB design by AronASzucs, published on GitHub. It is a 2-layer board measuring 137 × 84 mm, with 81 components from 49 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family. Other key parts include the BQ25886RGE, AP63203WU, UCC27517DBVR, USBLC6-2SC6 and SBM-20 Geiger Mueller Tube. By type, the board carries 28 resistors, 26 capacitors, 6 ICs, 6 diodes, 4 transistors and 3 connectors.

It belongs with the displays & leds, science & space and power & battery designs in this gallery.

From the project

Handheld ESP32-S3 Geiger counter with a firmware-regulated 400 V boost, SBM-20 tube, USB-C charging and OLED display.

Handheld, battery-powered Geiger counter built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 and a Soviet SBM-20 GM tube.

Status: Work in progress. The perfboard prototype regulates the tube supply at ~370–400 V, counts background radiation with an audible click per count, and clearly picks up real radioactive sources (see Measurements). The KiCad schematic is complete and PCB layout is underway.

Avalanche32: common questions

What microcontroller does the Avalanche32 use?

The Avalanche32 is built around the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, from the ESP32 family.

How big is the Avalanche32 PCB?

The Avalanche32 measures 137 × 84 mm, has 2 copper layers and is 1.6 mm thick.

How many components are on the Avalanche32?

81 components, from 49 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Avalanche32 design files?

From the AronASzucs/Avalanche32 repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout and the schematic; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Avalanche32 design in my own project?

The repository has no license, so all rights stay with AronASzucs. Use it as a reference, and ask the author before reusing the design.

Can I test firmware for the Avalanche32 without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug ESP32 firmware against it before you order a PCB.
