About the Sd2snes PCB

Sd2snes is an open source FPGA PCB design by dfederspiel, published on GitHub under the GPL-2.0 license. It is a board measuring 101.5 × 83 mm, with 147 components from 48 distinct parts.

Its main chip is the XC3S400-PQ208, from the FPGA family. Other key parts include the 74ALVC164245DGG, MIC23250-S4YMT, MCP1824-1802E/OT, MCP1824-2502E/OT and PIC12F629-I/P. By type, the board carries 78 capacitors, 24 resistors, 12 ICs, 8 connectors, 4 inductors and 3 transistors.

It belongs with the audio designs in this gallery.

From the project

64tass based multi-purpose cartridge for the SNES

SD card based multi-purpose cartridge for the Super Nintendo, originally created by ikari_01.

The sd2snes (now sold as FXPAK Pro) lets you load ROM files from an SD card and play them on real SNES hardware. It supports nearly the entire SNES library through FPGA-based enhancement chip emulation.

The cartridge has three main components:

The menu ROM is being ported from snescom to 64tass, a modern and actively maintained 65816 assembler. The port lives in snes-64tass/ alongside the original snes/.

Sd2snes: common questions

What microcontroller does the Sd2snes use?

The Sd2snes is built around the XC3S400-PQ208, from the FPGA family.

How big is the Sd2snes PCB?

The Sd2snes measures 101.5 × 83 mm and is 1.6002 mm thick.

How many components are on the Sd2snes?

147 components, from 48 distinct parts. The full bill of materials is listed on this page.

Where can I download the Sd2snes design files?

From the dfederspiel/sd2snes repository on GitHub, which has the KiCad layout; the links under Design files point to each one.

Can I use the Sd2snes design in my own project?

Yes, under the terms of its GPL-2.0 license, which dfederspiel chose for the repository.

Can I test firmware for the Sd2snes without the hardware?

Yes. HardLabs builds a simulation of the board from its netlist and BOM, so you can run and debug FPGA firmware against it before you order a PCB.
